  • How is 3d printing used in manufacturing?

3D printing (also called additive manufacturing) has moved far beyond prototyping and is now used in real, high-volume production across many industries. Here’s a breakdown of how it’s actually used in modern manufacturing:

1. Production of End-Use Parts (the biggest growth area)

Companies make final, functional parts that go straight into products sold to customers.

a.Aerospace: GE Aviation produces the LEAP engine fuel nozzle (metal 3D printed in cobalt-chrome) – 19 parts consolidated into 1, 20% lighter, 5× more durable. Over 100,000 have been printed so far.

b.Automotive: BMW has printed >1 million metal and polymer parts (window guides, fixtures, and now some customer-facing parts in the i8 Roadster and Mini).

c.Medical: Thousands of patient-specific hearing aid shells (almost the entire market), dental aligners (Align Technology prints millions of Invisalign trays), cranial and hip implants (titanium, lattice structures for bone ingrowth).

d.Consumer goods: Adidas 4D midsoles (lattice structures that are impossible with injection molding), custom insoles, eyewear frames (Materialise, Luxottica).

2. Tooling & Jigs/Fixtures (most common entry point)

Faster and cheaper than machined tooling.

Examples:

a.Custom assembly jigs, robotic end-effectors, drill guides, CMM fixtures.

b.Volkswagen, Ford, and Toyota use thousands of 3D-printed tools on assembly lines.

c.Often printed in carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon or ESD-safe materials.

3. Low-Volume & Bridge Production

a.When injection-mold tooling would take 8–12 weeks and cost $50k–$500k, companies print hundreds or thousands of parts while waiting.

b.Common in aerospace (spare parts for older planes), luxury goods, and specialty vehicles (Bugatti, Local Motors).

4. Spare Parts & On-Demand Manufacturing

Eliminates warehouses of obsolete inventory.

Examples:

a.U.S. Navy prints parts on ships.

b.Deutsche Bahn prints replacement train parts.

c.Mercedes-Benz Trucks offers 3D-printed spare parts for older models.

5. Mass Customization

Each part can be different at no extra cost.

Examples: Prosthetics, dental aligners, custom orthopedic insoles, motorcycle seats tailored to rider scan.
