Select a casting method based on prototype requirements (e.g., complexity, quantity, and precision). Common methods for aluminum prototypes include:
Sand Casting:
Best for low-cost, simple, or large parts.
Involves creating a sand mold from a pattern.
Suitable for small batches; less precise (tolerances ~±0.5 mm).
Investment Casting (Lost-Wax Casting):
Ideal for intricate, high-precision parts.
Uses a wax pattern coated with ceramic, melted out to form a mold.
Offers tight tolerances (~±0.1–0.2 mm) and smooth finishes.
Die Casting:
Best for high-volume, precise prototypes resembling final production parts.
Uses a steel mold; high initial cost but excellent for complex geometries.
Tolerances as tight as ±0.05 mm.
3D Printed Molds (Hybrid Approach):
Use 3D-printed patterns or molds (e.g., SLA or FDM) for sand or investment casting
Speeds up prototyping; ideal for complex designs.
