  • Can you cast from precious metal clay mold?

Yes, you can cast from a precious metal clay (PMC) mold, and it's actually a very popular technique among jewelers, especially for creating multiples of organic or detailed pieces. Here's how it works and what you need to know:

Two main ways to use PMC as a mold:

1.Burnout PMC mold (lost-wax style for metal casting)

a.You sculpt or shape your original model in precious metal clay (silver, gold, bronze, copper, etc.).

b.Fire the PMC piece normally (it sinters into solid metal).

c.Use the fired metal piece as a master model to make a flexible silicone mold (e.g., CoolSlip, RTV silicone).

d.Inject wax into the silicone mold to create wax copies.

e.Invest and burn out the wax as usual → cast in silver, gold, etc.

f.This is excellent when you want identical metal copies of something originally made in PMC.

2.Direct PMC-to-PMC molding (no wax, no casting flask)

a.Create your original design in unfired PMC.

b.Press fresh, moist PMC into/onto the unfired original to create a mold (or press the original into fresh PMC to make a negative).

c.Carefully separate while both are still leather-hard.

d.Let both dry completely, then fire them together or separately.

Result: You now have a fired metal “master” and a fired metal “mold” (actually more of a two-part press-mold system).

You can then press fresh unfired PMC into the fired metal mold, dry, and fire again → repeatable metal pieces without ever using wax or traditional casting.
