  • Can you use metal in enameled cast iron?

Yes, you can use metal utensils in enameled cast iron cookware (like Dutch ovens or skillets from brands such as Le Creuset or Staub), but it's not always the best choice and requires caution to avoid damaging the enamel coating.

Key Considerations:

1.It's generally safe if done gently: The enamel is a hard, glass-like layer fused to the cast iron, making it more durable than traditional nonstick surfaces. Light stirring or scraping with metal (e.g., stainless steel spoons or spatulas) won't harm it, but aggressive banging, scraping, or knocking against the rim can chip or crack the enamel over time.

2.Safer alternatives: Opt for wooden, silicone, or plastic utensils to minimize any risk. These are gentler on the surface and easier to clean.

3.Brand-specific notes: For Le Creuset, metal is allowed but avoid sharp edges or heavy impacts on the rim. Similar guidance applies to most enameled cast iron.

4.If the enamel does chip (rare with careful use), it can expose the underlying iron to rust, so inspect regularly and hand-wash the cookware to preserve it.
