  • What is a metal casting channel?

In metal casting, a metal casting channel typically refers to the sprue, which is a vertical hollow passage or channel in the mold through which molten metal is poured from the pouring basin into the mold cavity. This allows the liquid metal to flow under gravity, filling the mold to create the desired casting shape. Once cooled, the sprue (along with other excess material like risers and gates) is removed as part of the finishing process.

Key Components Related to Casting Channels

For context, metal casting often involves a system of channels to direct and distribute the molten metal efficiently:

This gating system helps minimize air entrapment, oxidation, and defects like porosity in the final casting. Common processes using these channels include sand casting, die casting, and investment casting.
