  • What is rotational plastic molding?

Rotational plastic molding, also known as rotomolding or rotational molding, is a manufacturing process used to create large, hollow, seamless plastic parts. It involves filling a mold with plastic resin powder, then slowly rotating and heating the mold so the powder melts and evenly coats the interior surfaces, forming the desired shape without applying pressure.

The process typically occurs in three main stages:

1.Loading and Heating: A measured amount of plastic powder (often polyethylene, but also nylon or PVC) is placed inside a hollow mold. The mold is sealed and placed in an oven, where it's rotated biaxially (both vertically and horizontally) at speeds around 20 revolutions per minute to ensure even distribution.

2.Cooling: Once the plastic fully coats the mold, it's removed from the heat and cooled (often with air or water sprays) while continuing to rotate to prevent warping.

3.Demolding: The cooled part is removed from the mold, resulting in a strong, uniform hollow product.

This method is ideal for items like tanks, playground equipment, kayaks, and automotive parts, as it allows for complex shapes and thick walls without weld lines.

Uniform Thickness: Rotation ensures even wall thickness, reducing weak spots.

Versatility: Can produce very large parts (up to 25 feet in diameter) with integrated features like handles or threads.
