Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Installing plastic (PVC) molding is a straightforward DIY project that mimics wood trim installation but accounts for PVC's expansion/contraction with temperature changes. Always work in a clean, dry space and wear safety gear. Leave 1/8-inch gaps at ends and around windows/doors for movement.

1.Measure and Plan: Measure the area where the molding will go (e.g., baseboards, door/window casings). Mark lengths on the PVC pieces, adding extra for corners or miters. Dry-fit pieces to check joints and ensure a 1/8-inch expansion gap at butt joints or around openings.

2.Cut the Pieces: Use a miter saw for angled cuts (e.g., 45° for corners) or circular saw for straight cuts. Cut slightly long and trim as needed. Sand all edges smooth with 320-grit sandpaper to remove burrs, then wipe with acetone-dampened cloth for a clean finish. Avoid overheating the PVC to prevent melting or cracking.

3.Prepare Surfaces: Ensure walls/floors are dust-free, dry, and grease-free. Lightly sand if needed and wipe clean. For joints, bevel edges slightly for better adhesion.

4.Apply Adhesive and Position: Start at a corner. Apply a bead of PVC adhesive along the back of the molding. Press firmly into place, using a level to ensure it's plumb or level. For long runs, work in sections to maintain alignment.

5.Secure with Fasteners: Nail or screw into studs/framing (not just sheathing) every 16 inches, starting 2 inches from ends. Use thin-shank nails or small-head screws to minimize splitting. Countersink fasteners and pre-drill holes if using screws (standard woodworking bits with 90°-110° point angle).

6.Join Pieces: For mitered corners, apply adhesive to both bevels, press together, and clamp for 15 minutes (or use tape). For scarf joints on long spans, overlap 45° cuts end-to-end and fasten into a stud. Cement joints with PVC glue for a strong bond (5-minute working time).

7.Fill and Caulk: Fill fastener holes and gaps with exterior PVC filler or auto-body filler; sand smooth once dry. Apply caulk to joints and seams for a seamless look and moisture barrier. Smooth with a wet finger or tool.

8.Finish: Clean the surface with mild detergent. If painting, prime first, then use light-colored acrylic latex paint. Allow 28-30 days for full curing. For exterior installs, choose UV-resistant PVC and seal all edges.
