Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Plastic Molding on Your Car
Plastic moldings (also called trim) on cars, like those around bumpers, doors, and wheel wells, can accumulate dirt, grime, and road residue. Regular cleaning prevents fading and keeps them looking new. Here's a simple, effective process:
Prepare the Area: Park your car in a shaded spot to avoid direct sunlight, which can cause cleaning products to dry too quickly. Rinse the entire vehicle with water to remove loose debris, focusing on the plastic moldings.
1.Wash the Car: Fill a bucket with water and add a pH-balanced car wash soap. Use a soft car wash mitt to gently wash the whole car, including the plastic moldings. This removes surface dirt without scratching the plastic. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a microfiber towel to prevent water spots.
2.Tackle Stubborn Grime on Trim: For heavily soiled or faded moldings, spray an all-purpose cleaner or degreaser directly onto the plastic. Let it sit for 30-60 seconds to break down grease and buildup. Use a medium bristle brush or soft toothbrush to gently scrub the surface in circular motions, paying attention to textured areas. Avoid harsh abrasives that could scratch the plastic.
3.Wipe and Buff: Rinse the area with clean water to remove the cleaner residue. Then, use a clean, dry microfiber towel to wipe down the moldings, buffing in straight lines for a streak-free finish. Work in small sections to ensure everything is thoroughly cleaned.
4.Optional: Apply Protection: Once dry, apply a trim protectant using a microfiber applicator pad. Massage it into the plastic and let it penetrate for 10-30 seconds before buffing off excess. This helps repel dirt and UV rays, making future cleanings easier. Reapply every 2-3 months or after washing.
