  • Can you paint plastic molding?

Yes, you can paint plastic molding (such as PVC trim, vinyl baseboards, or interior plastic trim) successfully, but it requires proper preparation to ensure the paint adheres well to the non-porous surface and doesn't peel or chip over time.

Steps to Paint Plastic Molding

1.Clean the surface: Wipe down the molding thoroughly with a degreaser or mild soap and water to remove dirt, oils, or residue. Rinse and let it dry completely.

2.Sand for adhesion: Lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to create a rough texture. This helps the primer and paint bond. Wipe away dust afterward.

3.Apply a plastic-specific primer: Use a bonding primer designed for plastics (like those for automotive or multi-surface use). Apply 1–2 light, even coats with a brush, roller, or spray, allowing 10–30 minutes of drying time between coats. This step is crucial for preventing peeling.

4.Paint the molding: Once the primer is dry (follow product instructions, usually 24 hours), apply your chosen paint—latex or alkyd-fortified for interiors works well. Use 2–3 thin coats, sanding lightly between each if needed, and let it cure fully (up to 30 days for best durability).
