In CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, the C-axis is a rotary axis that enables rotation of the workpiece or tool around the Z-axis (typically the vertical or spindle axis). This rotation is perpendicular to the primary linear axes (X for left-right movement, Y for front-back, and Z for up-down), allowing for more complex multi-axis machining operations beyond simple linear cuts.
Key Functions and Uses
1.Rotation for Precision: The C-axis precisely controls angular positioning or continuous rotation, often at the spindle end in lathes or mills. For example, it can index the workpiece to specific angles for drilling or milling slots.
2.Enhanced Capabilities: In CNC lathes, adding a C-axis (often paired with live tooling) transforms the machine into a mill-turn center, enabling simultaneous turning and milling on the same setup. This reduces setup time and improves accuracy for cylindrical parts.
3.Programming Notes: It's programmed in degrees (e.g., C90 for 90° rotation) and can support polar interpolation, where the C-axis effectively replaces the Y-axis for curved toolpaths on cylindrical surfaces.
This feature is common in 4-axis or 5-axis CNC setups, making it essential for industries like aerospace, automotive, and woodworking for processing irregular shapes or panel edges.
