- Can cnc machines cut wood?
Yes, CNC machines are highly effective for cutting wood, making them a go-to tool for woodworking, furniture making, signage, and prototyping. CNC routers, in particular, are optimized for wood due to their speed and ability to handle large sheets, while mills work well for finer details or harder woods.
1.Machine Types: CNC routers are ideal for flat stock like plywood or MDF, offering large work areas and high feed rates. CNC mills suit smaller, more intricate jobs on solid woods like oak or walnut.
2.Materials: Softwoods (e.g., pine) cut easily; hardwoods (e.g., maple) may need slower speeds to avoid burning or tear-out. Composites like MDF generate more dust and require good extraction.
3.Tools and Settings: Use carbide upcut or compression bits for clean edges. Run at high spindle speeds (12,000–24,000 RPM) with fast feeds (up to 200 IPM) and shallow passes (1/8–1/4 inch depth) to prevent splintering. Downcut bits minimize tear-out on the top surface.
4.Fixtiencing and Safety: Vacuum tables or spoilboards secure stock; always use dust collection to manage fine particles, which can be hazardous and clog machines.
