- Can a cnc machine cut acrylic?
Yes, CNC machines can effectively cut acrylic, which is a popular thermoplastic material for applications like signage, enclosures, and prototypes due to its clarity, machinability, and ease of processing. Both CNC routers and mills are commonly used for this, with routers often preferred for sheet stock and mills for more precise or 3D work.
1.Material Type: Cast acrylic (e.g., Plexiglas) machines better than extruded, as it has higher thermal stability and resists melting or cracking during high-speed cuts.
2.Tools and Settings: Use sharp, single-flute or O-flute end mills (carbide preferred) with high spindle speeds (18,000+ RPM) and appropriate feed rates to minimize heat buildup, which can cause melting or chipping. Climb milling is often recommended for smoother edges.
3.Fixturing: Secure the sheet with vacuum hold-downs or clamps to prevent vibration, and use coolant or air blasts if needed for heat management.
4.Post-Processing: Edges may need flame polishing or sanding for a clear finish.
