The machine is controlled by computer programs that dictate precise movements to cut, drill, or shape materials like metal, wood, or plastic into cylindrical or symmetrical parts.

Key Features:

Rotational Motion: The workpiece is held in a chuck or spindle and rotates rapidly, while the cutting tool moves along linear axes (typically X and Z) to remove material.

Axes: Most CNC lathes are 2-axis (X for radial movement, Z for longitudinal), but advanced models may include additional axes (e.g., Y-axis or live tooling) for more complex operations.

Tooling: Uses various tools (e.g., cutting, drilling, or threading tools) mounted on a turret or toolholder to shape the workpiece.

What It Does:

Turning: Reduces the diameter of a workpiece to create cylindrical shapes like shafts, rods, or tubes.

Facing: Smooths the end of a workpiece to create a flat surface.

Drilling: Creates holes along the workpiece’s center axis.

Threading: Cuts threads for screws or bolts.

Grooving and Parting: Forms grooves or cuts off finished parts from the raw material.

Knurling: Adds textured patterns for better grip on handles or knobs.

Complex Operations: With live tooling (rotating tools), it can mill, drill off-center, or perform other non-turning tasks.
