  • What is Cold Chamber Die Casting?

Cold chamber die casting is a high-pressure metal casting process used to manufacture precise, durable components from metals with high melting points, such as aluminum, zinc, brass, copper, and magnesium alloys. Unlike hot chamber die casting, where the melting pot is integrated into the machine, the cold chamber method separates the melting furnace from the casting machine to prevent corrosion and wear from aggressive, high-temperature molten metals. This makes it ideal for producing intricate, large, or thick-walled parts that require strength and dimensional accuracy, such as automotive components, electronics housings, and aerospace fittings.

How the Cold Chamber Die Casting Process Works

The process involves several key steps, typically completed in a cycle time of seconds to minutes depending on part complexity:

1.Melting the Metal: The raw metal is melted in an external furnace, reaching temperatures often exceeding 600–700°C (1,112–1,292°F) for alloys like aluminum.

2.Ladling the Molten Metal: A measured amount of molten metal is ladled or poured manually or automatically into a "shot sleeve" (a cold injection chamber) on the die casting machine.

3.Injection: A hydraulic plunger forces the molten metal into the die (mold) cavity at high pressure (up to 20,000 psi or more), ensuring it fills intricate details without voids.

4.Cooling and Solidification: The metal cools and solidifies within the steel die, often with built-in shrinkage compensation to maintain tolerances.

5.Ejection and Finishing: The die opens, and the solidified part (casting) is ejected using pins. Post-processing may include trimming, surface treatments like anodizing, or machining.

This method produces denser castings with excellent mechanical properties, thinner walls, and smoother finishes compared to other casting techniques.
