1.Process:
Sand Casting: Molten metal is poured by gravity into a single-use sand mold, which is broken to retrieve the part.
Die Casting: Molten metal is injected under high pressure into a reusable steel die, with parts ejected after solidification.
Materials:
Sand Casting: Supports both ferrous (e.g., steel, iron) and non-ferrous metals (e.g., aluminum, brass).
Die Casting: Limited to non-ferrous metals (e.g., aluminum, zinc, magnesium).
2.Precision and Finish:
Sand Casting: Moderate precision (±0.5–1.5 mm), rougher surface requiring more post-processing.
Die Casting: High precision (±0.1 mm), smooth surface with minimal finishing needed.
Production Volume:
Sand Casting: Ideal for low- to medium-volume or one-off parts due to low-cost, single-use molds.
Die Casting: Suited for high-volume production due to fast cycles and durable dies.
3.Tooling Costs:
Sand Casting: Low tooling costs (sand and patterns are inexpensive).
Die Casting: High tooling costs (steel dies are expensive but reusable).
4.Applications:
Sand Casting: Large parts like engine blocks or pump housings for automotive and heavy industry.
Die Casting: Smaller, precise parts like automotive components or electronics enclosures.
