- What is vacuum casting aluminum?
The vacuum casting aluminum process uses a vacuum to draw molten aluminum into a mold, minimizing air entrapment and improving casting quality. Here is a brief overview:
Mold preparation: Make a mold (usually made of silicone, plaster or sand) with a cavity that matches the desired part.
Vacuum application: Place the mold into a vacuum chamber, or apply a vacuum to the cavity.
Metal pouring: Molten aluminum is poured into the mold while vacuum extracts the air, reducing porosity and ensuring that the metal fills intricate details.
Cooling and removal: After the aluminum cools and solidifies, the casting is removed from the mold.
Finishing: The casting may be machined, polished or surface treated.
The advantages are: High-precision parts can be produced. Vacuum minimizes gas entrapment, thereby reducing porosity and improving the strength of the casting. Suitable for small and medium-volume production. Suitable for a variety of aluminum alloys to obtain different mechanical properties.
Main applications are, aerospace components (e.g. lightweight brackets), automotive components (e.g. engine components, housings), prototyping and small-batch production, decorative or functional industrial parts.
