   Fixing Stringing in 3D Printing

Stringing happens when the printhead oozes filament while moving between areas. Here are the main fixes:

1. Enable/Increase Retraction

This is the most effective fix. Retraction pulls filament back into the nozzle during travel moves.

  • Retraction distance: Start at 1–2mm (direct drive) or 4–7mm (Bowden)

  • Retraction speed: 25–45 mm/s is a good range

2. Lower Print Temperature

High temps = runny filament = more ooze.

  • Drop temperature by 5°C increments and test

  • PLA: try 190–210°C | PETG: 230–240°C | ABS: 230–245°C

3. Increase Travel Speed

Faster travel = less time for filament to ooze mid-move.

  • Aim for 150–200 mm/s travel speed

4. Enable "Combing" or "Avoid Crossing Perimeters"

This keeps the nozzle over already-printed areas during travel, so strings stay hidden or don't form at all. Found in Cura (Combing Mode) and PrusaSlicer (Avoid crossing perimeters).

5. Reduce Print Speed

Slower overall speed gives better pressure control and less ooze buildup.

6. Check for Wet Filament

Moisture-absorbed filament strings badly. Dry your filament at:

  • PLA: 45–50°C for 4–6 hrs

  • PETG: 65°C for 6 hrs

  • ABS: 80°C for 4–6 hrs

7. Enable "Wipe Before Retract" / Coasting

These settings bleed off nozzle pressure before a travel move, reducing ooze.
