- What does a 3d printer use to print?
A 3D printer builds objects layer by layer using various materials, depending on the printing technology. The most common type for home and hobbyist use is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), which extrudes melted thermoplastic filament from a spool through a heated nozzle.
Common Filaments for FDM Printers
1.PLA (Polylactic Acid) — Biodegradable, easy to print, low warping; ideal for beginners and prototypes.
2.ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) — Stronger and more heat-resistant but prone to warping and fumes.
3.PETG — Balances ease of use with durability and chemical resistance.
4.Other options include TPU (flexible), Nylon (tough and wear-resistant), and composites (e.g., carbon fiber-filled).
Here are examples of filament spools (mostly ABS in these images) and an FDM printer in action:

Other 3D Printing Technologies and Materials
Resin-based (SLA/DLP) → Uses liquid photopolymer resin cured by UV light for high-detail prints.
