- Key Considerations for Prototype Plastic Molding
Mold Cost and Durability:
Prototype molds are cheaper (aluminum vs. steel) but less durable, suitable for 100–1,000 cycles.
Use 3D-printed or silicone molds for very small runs to save costs.
Material Behavior:
PLA requires precise temperature control (mold at 20–40°C) due to its low heat resistance and stickiness.
Optimize injection speed and pressure to avoid shear stress, which can degrade materials like PLA.
Tolerances and Quality:
Injection molding achieves tight tolerances (±0.05–0.1 mm), ideal for production-like parts.
Vacuum casting offers ±0.2–0.5 mm, suitable for visual or low-precision prototypes.
Shenzhen Alu Rapid’s ISO 9001:2015 certification ensures consistent quality.
Speed vs. Cost:
Injection molding is faster for multiple parts but requires mold fabrication (days to weeks).
Vacuum casting or 3D printing is quicker for single units or complex designs.
Defect Prevention:
Ensure proper venting to avoid air traps or burn marks.
Control cooling to prevent warping or sink marks.
For PLA, use polished molds or release agents to ease demolding.
